Bocana Bay Highlights

Puerto Aventuras Boats in Bocana Bay

Bocana Bay Highlights

What is the Bocana?

The Bocana Bay is located in the front of the beach in Puerto Aventuras, known as the Fatima Bay. The bay hosts up to 20 boats that can anchor there, the water is shallow around the edges and more than deep enough to jump into from the middle.

When we make a stop in the bay this is when we pull out all the toys, lily pad, floaties, and paddle boards. If you want to grab a mask and play in the bay this is also fun.

The crew from every boat will make sure that the guys have drink in hand, enjoy the amazing food and snacks offered aboard the vessels, and that the music won’t stop.

Why do we go to the Bocana bay?

Bocana bay which is what most people call it, is surrounded by a low wall made of rocks. These rocks offers protection from wind and waves. It offers a calm pretty location, perfect for a stop after snorkeling or on days when the weather is bad.

The bay offers the perfect place to anchor and still be able to get out on the ocean and enjoy the best the Caribbean has to offer. Clients who do not like to swim, or are not as comfortable out on the ocean, this is the perfect location to go.

Does every tour go to the Bocana?

No, not every tour out of Puerto Aventuras goes to the Bocana. Our 4-hour charters normally go to In’ah Bay or Xpu-ha to snorkel on the reef. The 5-hour charters go first to the reef and then to the Bocana for a swim top. All our 3-hour sunset tours, go out on the ocean and then anchor in Bocana for the final 2 hours of so of the charter.  The option to use the Bocana is given to clients on days when the ocean makes arriving to In’ah Bay not fun for most clients who are not regulars on the ocean.

Can we go to the Bocana instead of Snorkel?

All our tours can go to the Bocana if the client wants to. Please note if you choose to go to Bocana on the 4-hour tour there is not enough time to get to the reef so we will forgo the snorkeling portion of the trip. This means we can sail and or motor along the coast and then come in an anchor. We always recommend this as an option as well for those groups who have enjoyed too many margaritas the night before.

The Bocana bay in Puerto Aventuras Marina is the only marina on the coast that can still offer this little gem as an option to our guests. We look forward to having you come out and having a great time with us!

Riviera Maya: Top 5 things to do

Are you looking for some exciting and adventurous activities to make your vacation memorable? Look no further! There are plenty of fun activities you can indulge in during your trip to the Riviera Maya, Mexico and here are our top 5!

#1 Cenote Tour

Cenotes whether above ground or below are one of the most enchanting things to do in the local area. Fresh cold water pools are created all over our region due to erosion of the the lime stone that over times collapes and creates swiss cheese like holes thru the ground. For the last 20 years, divers have been exploring and mapping these underground caverns. They have been featured in national geographics and delighting visitors since people started first visiting the region. Cenotes can be found in the three forms. A natural water pool, an underground cave that you can  explore and swim thru certain spots that have water, or dry cenote, that once had water but now are like undrground caves.

Our current favorites

Cenote Cristalino for nature lovers who want a refreshing dip in amazing clear water. Perfect for family groups, and fun!

Buuts Ha Cenote Club is wow for those who want to feel bougie, and party.  The drinks are great and the atmosphere is unbeatable.

Taak Bi Ha, if you want to expierence cenotes on another dimension, go underground. Tak be ha is one of those cenotes that is not super visited and still makes it a great location to blow the mind of your kids or take some amazing photos.

#2 Snorkel with Turtles

Snorkeling in itself is an exhilarating experience, but snorkeling with turtles takes it to a whole new level. Swimming alongside these gentle creatures is an unforgettable experience that you will cherish forever. There are several places around the world where you can snorkel with turtles, but the best spots in the Riviera Maya, are Akumal and then by Tulum ruins.  Not only do you get to interact with turtles in their natural habitat, but you also get to see colorful fish, vibrant coral reefs, and other marine creatures.

#3 Mayan Ruins

The Mayan civilization is one of the most fascinating cultures in history, and exploring their ruins is an excellent way to learn about their ancient civilization. The Mayan ruins are scattered throughout Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, and each site has its unique charm. You can visit famous sites like Chichen Itza, Tulum, or Ek Balam and marvel at the intricate architecture and the rich history of this ancient civilization. Exploring Mayan ruins is not only fun but also educational.

The Best Ruins

Our personal top ruins is Ek Balam, the site is small, located out toward Valladolid, which is a perfect excuse to try some amazing traditional yucatecan food, and learn about the history of the Yucatan. The site is one of the few that have restored carvings that really give you a sense of the stunning beauty of the ruins. It is also the last ruin that you can still climb.

Our 2nd favorite ruin to visit is Tulum, you cannot help but stop on your vacation in the Riviera Maya. The best times to arrive at the ruins are very early in the morning, or at about 3:30pm. If you choose the later timing, usually there is almost no one there in the lower seasons. You will be able to see the beautiful liquid blue of the caribbean set upon of the ruins and it’s amazing views and creates better pictures.

Our surpising last pick is Muyil ruins. There are a couple of reasons we love this location. One it is wonderfully ignored by most tourists. It is in the jugle about an hour past Tulum situated near a magical canal you can float down after a short boat ride. The ruins themselves are large and magestic and if you go on our tour you can enjoy the shade and just be awed that this large site sits so covered. You traverse the ruins site, and come along a little wooder walk way where you will see local flora and fauna eventually ending up right at the boat launch location. There are limited spaced into the reserve for the boats so I highly reccomend you reserve your location in advance.

#4  Private Boat Rental

Rent a private boat and exploring the pristine waters. Escape the crowds and enjoy the beauty of nature in peace. With a private boat rental, you can also stop at wonderful reefs, and explore the stunning coastline. Renting a private boat can be affordable and super fun. In the Riviera Maya you can find wonderful private romantic dinners or private day charters that can range from $130 usd per person to $450 usd. This activity is perfect for those who want to enjoy some privacy and relax amidst the spectacular scenery, enjoy nature at its best, or even dance you day away on a boat

#5  Beach Clubs and Beaches

You have come all the way to the Riviera Maya, a place known for its fabulous beaches and amazing water. Going to the beach is a must, no explanation is needed.

The best Beach Club in Tulum according to us is a long-existing beach club, that has not changed hands or become overtly sheek, it is affordable with good food, and has a nice staff. Our winner is the Playa Paraiso Beach Club. The club has incredible views of the ocean and just a short walk down the best views of the Tulum Ruins from the ocean. You can also board a local panga, or a small fisherman boat and get even better views from the sea.

Our favorite beach in the region is Xpu-ha. The Xpu-ha beach has silky white sand and is one of the prettiest beaches along the coast. There are a number of beach restaurants where you can enjoy lunch or beach chairs with a minimum consumption amount. You can enjoy beach massages or just float in the ocean.

Another local beach favorite is Xcacel Beach which is along the highway about 3/4 of the way to Tulum heading from Playa Del Carmen. This is a beach that is a protected area used for turtle protection and turtle releases. You can enter this wild beach for a donation of about $100 pesos a person and there is also a cenote on the land you can take a quick jump into. At this beach there are restrictions. No sunblock and you can bring water and fruit. It is definitely worth the visit. Don’t miss a jump in the cenote there as well.

Private Boat Charter In'ah Bay Mexico

Common Questions about boat charters in the Riviera Maya, Mexico

What is a private charter boat?

In the Riviera Maya Mexico, a private boat charter is a boat that you and your group have rented, and the standard duration for day trips is between 3 and 9 hours.

What is the average cost of renting a catamaran in Riviera Maya, Mexico?

The price for a catamaran charter is $150 to $170 USD per person, while a luxury charter about $260 USD per person

What is the average cost to rent a yacht in the Riviera Maya, Mexico?

The average cost of renting a yacht is $145 USD per person. A luxury yacht service can cost between $250 USD and $300 USD per person for a 4-hour charter.

What is a skippered charter?

A skippered charter involves having a captain on board. In Mexico, according to maritime law, it is required to have a Mexican captain on board any Mexican vessel. We do not offer barefoot or bareboat charters at this location. All standard charters come with both a captain and a crew.

How much does it cost to rent a boat for a day in Cancun?

To rent a boat in Cancun, prices can vary widely. The market for day charters in Cancun offers many old boats for rent. Therefore, it is important to exercise caution when selecting a rental. The cost for a charter ranges from

Are charter boats worth the cost?

Charter boats are worth it for the following reasons: They allow you to create your own private adventure. No getting smushed next to 30 other people. You are consulted about the service. What do you like to eat and drink? What would you like to do abroad? You can party, sail, snorkel, or simply float. Traveling at your own pace with your own crew is a game changer.

Why can’t you wear shoes on a chartered boat?

Shoes are not allowed on board boats as they can cause damage to the teak and interiors, and they can also track in dirt and other contaminants. They are slippery on certain surfaces. It is customary practice for most if not all, charter yachts. All shoes are collected, stored, and then returned at the end of the charter.

Do day charter boats have toilets?

Yes, we are happy to say that all of our local Riviera Maya Catamarans and Yacht Charters have toilets on board. The toilets are marine toilets, which means they require special toilet paper.

SNORKEL WITH TURTLES?

If you want to swim with turtles, you can find them along the coast of the Riviera Maya, on some days you find find them more than others. May to October is considering the Turtle breeding season, durng this time you will see turtles more likely in the waters of In’ah Bay, Maroma Bay in Puerto Morelos and Xpu-Ha. On our private boat tours with Riviera Maya Catamarans.

If you want to be certain to see turtles we reccomend you go out with Mexico Sol Tours, to explore Akumal Bay for the best chance at Turtles. just click here.

PUERTO MORELOS SNORKELING

Great-Snorkeling-at-the-Maroma-Reef

Many people ask us if snorkeling is better in Puerto Morelos and the Maroma area versus, Puerto Aventuras and In’ah Bay.

During certain times of the year, Maroma bay is a better location, there are fewer vessels. It is an area known for seaweed, which turtles feed on. There are still more examples of a more undeveloped coastline. You can se some amazing wildlife.

One of my favorite videos here shows the beautiful area we sail to here

If you are looking to party, I would probably stick with the Puerto Aventuras Marina, as you can always go tot the Bocana bay.

WHAT ABOUT COZUMEL?

Visiting Cozumel is a bucket list item for many people. There are a couple of ways to get there and snorkel. We have to mention that Cozumel has current so you want to be aware of that.

The easiest option is to take the ferry over to Cozumel Island and book a tour to snorkel Palancar.

Many of our clients rent a private boat for the day and sail or motor over to the island. While this is an amazing option we always want people to be aware this is about two hours to cross the sea between the coasts, unless you have great weather this can be a bumpy ride. If you are still game give us a chat and we can help you pick the best boats. Please note this is an 8 to 9-hour day trip.

They are perfect places to go when the ocean is too rough or you want to immerse yourself in a wild subterranean expierence.

We highly reccomend you do not miss this amazing and unique snorkeling expierence while here. If you want more information just click right here.

Isla Mujeres Snorkeling

Hands down one of the prettiest oceans to cross and places to snorkel is Isla Mujeres. There are three different places to stop including the Musa museum, and attempt to repair the reef here.

We highly suggest if you have time you definately book a private charter to the Island or even just a ticket on our public day charter to the best public isla mujeres sailing tour being offered.

Is it Better to Rent a Yacht or a Catamaran on your Riviera Maya Vacation?

Puerto Aventuras Boat Rentals

Puerto aventuras reef

What it the difference between a Yacht and Catamaran?

You will go sailing or yachting on your boat charter from Puerto Aventuras  you want your group to be comfortable and have a great time.

Performance: Yachts are designed for speed and agility, and are typically more maneuverable than catamarans. Catamarans, on the other hand, are known for their stability and comfort, making them ideal for laying out, dancing and spending time outside.

Hull design: Yachts typically have a single, narrow hull, while catamarans have two parallel hulls, giving them a wider and more stable platform. The difference is that you are less likely to get seasick on a catamaran than a yacht.

Interior  yacht more likely has a more luxurious interior area. While a catamarans interior is larger inside with a more open concept

Cancun Catamaran Rental

Are there diffferent types of Catmarans and Yacht Rentals?

To your left you see a Leopard Catamaran, most catmarans sail, They have the front and top sail, that allow them to travel with the wind.

The two hulls on each side of the boat allow it to cut thru the water, keeping an overall flatter service that makes seasickness less likely, they have a larger rear space for seating and more often now, we are even seeing beds on top on the vessels for more layout space.

In a catamaran you will usually have a coupld of interior bedrooms you can use for changing and bathrooms, sounds systems, and in the Riviera Maya, you will always have crew.

What is a Motor Catamaran?

Sailing and Yachting tours from Puerto Aventuras

This is a picture of our Leopard 51ft Motor Catamaran.

This vessel can fit comfortably up to 30 people and has not only the stability of a catamaran but the strenght of a yacht.

Without a doubt, the Leopard 51ft combines the very best of a catamaran with the luxury and ease of a motor yacht. This luxury vessel is ideal for gatherings of friends and family. Many motor yachts have two levels to layout, large interiors and exterior spaces.

This is one of the nicest and most expensive rental boats here in the Riviera Maya, Mexico.

This is a boat rental is a great compromise between a motoryacht and a catamaran.

The specific catamaran is equipped with a powerful sound system, crew, host, private chef and incredible service

For an even more amazing experience, upgrade to champagne, our floating pool that can be connected to the boat or a number of other goodies.

What makes a yacht special?

A yacht is amazing ride, sleek fast and a super way to see the coastline of the Riviera Maya Mexico.

Great for smaller groups, bachelor parties or a small group of ladies.

Be treated by our amazing staff on board, as they serve you drinks, play your favorite tunes and feed you and your friends.

What can you do on a motoryacht?

We can snorkel, swim, and all our boats offer upon request, a paddle board and underwater camera.

Most of our yachts offer a fishing pole, please ask in advance.

Ultimately, the choice between a yacht and a catamaran will depend on your personal preferences, budget, and intended use of the boat. If you’re looking for speed and luxury, a yacht may be the way to go. If you’re more interested in stability, space, and comfort, a catamaran may be a better choice.

Swimming with Sea Turtles

Riviera Maya Sailing Catamarans

We can all admit swimming with turtles is kinda a dream for most of us. They are safe, amazingly cool reptiles, that make us think of  Crush, from the movie Finding Nemo.  The Green turtle, Haksbill turtle and Loggerhead Turtles are just one of the amazing creatures you may encounter while swimming and snorkeling in the Riviera Maya aboard our catamaran charters.  We cannot promise you will see turtles on your catamaran charter. They are wild and they have seasons.

Very Important Facts about Swimming with Turtles in the Riviera Maya

In'ah Bay Snorkel Riviera Maya catamarans boat charter

One of the most important things while swimming  with turtles, or snorkeling in the Riviera Maya is to respect our sea creatures.  Do not touch, harm or chase any of the sea life you encounter.

Catamarans tend to be better than yachts to get closer and they tend to make less noise.

PLEASE wear sunscreen that is REEF SAFE, or better yet, none at all, use a swim shirt and put sunscreen on when back on the boat.

Our snorkel guides are trained to take you on underwater snorkeling adventures that protect you and the wild life you encounter.  Come on and out and learn more fun facts about the super cool creatures on our catamaran sailing adventures.

These stunning and majestic turtles can live up to 100 years old and with your help we can all enjoy sharing them in the Mexican Caribbean for a long time to come.

When do Turtles Nest and Hatch ?

baby turtles in riviera maya, mexico

The months of June thru November are the nesting and hatching season for Turtles in in the Riviera Maya.

April thru up to August we have turtles heading up to the beaches to lay their eggs. Please remember if you are renting an airbnb or private villa leave your exterior porch light in the rear off or ask you manager to install red lights so that the turtles feel safe coming up to the beach to breed.. These species are protected but we need to help as well.

Every year in October there are festivals to release turtles back into the ocean that that take place all along the Rivera Maya. There is one at Xcaret pack as well as one at Xcacel Beach.  So during the month of October right up to the end if you are lucky you may even see a baby trying to get out to sea.

Snorkeling With Sting Rays

Snorkeling with Sting Rays

Sting Rays are just one of the amazing creatures you may encounter while snorkeling in the Riviera Maya aboard our catamaran tours.  They are called southern sting rays, and here are some fun facts about these interesting fellows.

Sting rays may not look like any type of fish you know, but in fact they are related to the shark. They do not have bones but cartilage.

Their skins are so smooth, they almost feel like velvet.  and there are about  around 70 species of stingrays in the world.

Sting rays are commonly found in tropical and subtropical coastal ocean waters.

snorkeling with sea rays

Fun Facts

Sting rays eyes are on top of their bodies, yet their mouth, gills, and nostrils are on the underside. Because of this stingrays cannot see their prey, instead they use smell and electroreceptor’s to find food.

Sting rays mainly feed on molluscs, crustaceans such as crabs, and small fish.  They suck in their food and then chomp on it chewing like a human does before swallowing.

Mature southern stingrays have been known to reach sizes of nearly five feet wide and some can be up to 14 feet long.

Most mature at about 4 or 5 years of age and can live as long as 15 to 20 years.

women and sea ray in cozumel tour onboar a private catamaran charter

Are Sting Rays Dangerous ?

These ladies had a ray swim right past them when we sailed them to Cozumel.

One of the most important things while snorkeling is to respect and not touch, harm or chase any of the sea life you encounter.

Most varieties of stingrays have one or more barbed venomous stingers on their tail,. While this may sound dangerous there is no need to be afraid. The ray only uses their tails when they feel threatened and they’re only used in self-defense.

Sting rays flat bodies allow them to dig in and hide from predators on the sandy ocean bottom.  Shuffling your feet along a sandy shallow sea floor is the best way to avoid stepping on a stingray and potentially getting stung.

Sting rays are very non aggressive. They can be found swimming alone or in groups.
